Date Corrections

January 4, 1863
The date Shedd wrote on this letter stated the year as 1862.  From the text of the letter and the postmark on the envelope, we know that he wrote the year incorrectly. The letter was written January 4, 1863, from St. Augustine.   We have left the date on the transcript as he wrote it, but have placed the letter chronologically where it belongs.
December 6, 1862
Shedd dated this letter as 1863, but it is almost certain that it was written in December of 1862.   Another letter in the collection is also dated December 6, so he may have made an error in the day and the year.  It is known that the Seventh New Hampshire regiment was not in St. Augustine in December of 1863.  It can be assumed that Shedd was already home in New Hampshire by this date.  The Dartmouth collection contains letters written during November and December from doctors that had examined him in Concord. We have left the date on the transcript as he wrote it, but have placed the letter chronologically where it belongs.

undated fragment
The date of this letter fragment is not known, though it can be assumed it was written from St. Augustine, most likely in April, 1863. Shedd mentions a man named Colbath from his company. This soldier is listed in the regimental roster as belonging to Company A, which Shedd joined in September, 1862. He also mentions a failed expedition which Colonel Putnam led. This could refer to the Charleston affair that Shedd mentions in several other letters during that month.
