59.The Old City Gates are at the head of St. George Street. They are built of Coquina and are cherished landmarks.
Built about 1620, the city is located on a peninsula running south. With the St. Sebastian River on the West and the Matanzas River on the East, it was protected from land attacks. North of the river was a moat filled
with water, and one entered the city over a draw bridge and proceeded through these gates, which were closed at night. Guards were stationed in the sentry boxes. |
