104.The river in many places is a mere succession of loops, and in this place which is called the "Double S" the steamer turns all points of the compass inside of a mile. The steamer is of a peculiar construction. Each paddle wheel is worked independently and by separate engines, so that in turning very sharp bends one works in an opposite direction to the other. In this way the steamer can turn around in its own length.
