Fort Jefferson was at this time the principal depot for distribution of rations and munitions of war to the forts and military posts located in the southeast -- on both the Atlantic Coast and within the Gulf of Mexico.  Stationed at the fort prior to the arrival of the 7th New Hampshire were Company M of the 1st US Artillery and Companies B, I, & K of the 6th New York, Billy Wilson's Zouaves.  pp. 167-168.
