"There never had been more that five or six companies on the island at one time, and there were no accommodations for more, yet here had come a full regiment of one thousand men and the question 'Where should they be quartered?' was a serious one.  The parade ground was quickly converted into an impromptu campground; tents were pitched, guns stacked, and as if by magic, camp fires appeared with men sitting around eating, their knapsacks serving as tables, or reading letters they found awaiting them." (Schmidt, p. 168)
