"There never had been more that five or six companies on the island at one time, and there were no accommodations for more, yet here had come a full regiment of one thousand men and the question 'Where should they be quartered?' was a serious one. The parade ground was quickly converted into an impromptu campground; tents were pitched, guns stacked, and as if by magic, camp fires appeared with men sitting around eating, their knapsacks serving as tables, or reading letters they found awaiting them."
