Truman Seymour, the son of a Methodist preacher, was born in Burlington, Vermont, on September 24, 1824. He attended two years at Norwich University, in Vermont, before entering West Point. He graduated from West Point in 1864 and fought as an artillery officer in the Mexican War. Seymour then served against the Florida Seminoles from 1856-1858. Seymour was given the rank of major for his gallant conduct in the defense of Fort Sumter. In November, 1862, after attaining the rank of general, Seymour was transferred to Charleston Harbor, where he led the attack on Battery Wagner, in July, 1863. General Seymour was severely wounded in this encounter. Seymour survived his injuries and was able to serve out the rest of the war. After his retirement, he spent his remaining years in Florence, Italy, where he died in 1891. |
