General Joseph Finegan

Joseph Finegan was born in Clones, Ireland, on November 17, 1814. He migrated in his early twneties to Florida, where he established himself as a planter and subsequently built a lumber company in Jacksonville. He later moved to Fernandina and worked in railroad construction. Finegan was a member of the secession convention in 1861 and was placed in charge of military affairs for the state by Governor Milton. On April 5, 1862, Finegan ws commissioned brigadier general in the confederate Army. He became the commander of the District of Middle and East Florida. Finegan commanded troops in various battles in Florida and Virginia. After the war, he became a member of the Florida state senate (1865-1866). (pp. 88-89) |
