Fernandina,
Florida, is described by Little as a fine seaport, with a magnificent landlocked harbor,
capable of holding many large vessels. Ships could be loaded and unloaded without
difficulty at the wharves. Prior to the Civil War, large quantities of lumber,
sugar, and cotton were shipped from this port. The beach at Fernandina measured more
than 18 miles, one of the finest in Florida. The sand, however, was filled with
fleas, which gave the men great discomfort. (Little, pp. 98-100). |
