Charles Deering Collection (M0055)Finding Aid

    Charles Deering (1852-1927) was a collector of art and a friend to many notable artists of his time. His father William was the founder of what became the International Harvester Co. The Charles Deering Estate in South Florida was Deering's home. His collection primarily consists of photograph albums of Deering's travels, correspondence, clippings, and art programs.

    Collection includes numerous materials relating to labor history, unionism, and radicalism in South Florida, in the form of books, labor newspapers, films, videos, and meeting minutes; sample materials include the Jack Rubenstein Collection (1920s-1980s), documenting his involvement with the Young Communist League, the Textile Workers Union, and the CIO; scrapbooks and clippings from the Dade County Classroom Teachers Association; minutes, correspondence, and reports from the Miami local of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union (local 415/475); and meeting minutes of the South Florida AFL-CIO.     Mark F. Boyd (1889-1968) was a physician, researcher and writer who specialized in tropical medicine with an emphasis on malaria. His collection contains materials relating to Florida and U.S. history as well as to natural history and medicine. The collection includes maps, newspapers, prints, photographs, pamphlets, original documents, copies of historical documents, reprints of articles and other materials.

    American petroleum baron and founder of the Florida East Cost Railroad, Henry Flagler (1830-1913) created the Model Land Company (MLC) in 1896 to manage his rapidly expanding real estate holdings in the state of Florida. The Model Land Company Records do not represent the comprehensive records of the MLC but does constitute a large portion of the surviving records. The files consist of the administrative and financial records of the MLC's Miami-based land agent, Frederick S. Morse, and those agencies that followed Morse: Pepper and Potter; Pepper and Coffrin, Inc.; Frank J. Pepper and Son, Inc.; and Frank J. Pepper, Inc.
