Early Nursing Class
Established as South Florida's first baccalaureate nursing program in 1948, the nursing program was originally part of the College of Arts and Sciences. The Department of Nursing graduated its first students in 1956. It was later scheduled for dissolution, but emphasis on outstanding medical care at the School of Medicine gave reason for it to continue. The School of Nursing, relocated on the Medical Campus, was formed in 1968. The School was one of the first in the country to offer the nurse practitioner program in 1973. Two years after introducing the master's in nursing in 1976, the School added nurse midwifery and psychiatric-mental health nursing options. Now located on the Main Campus, the School of Nursing was the first in Florida to offer the doctorate in nursing in 1985.
