Thomas Gage was a Dominican friar who traveled to Central America from 1625 to 1637 and recounted his experiences in A New Survey of the West Indies... (1699) This book became a sensation in England as Gage provides insights to American geography and society, and promotes anti-Spanish sentiment through his descriptions of Spanish affluence in America. This and the first edition from 1677 are both available on the electronic database, Early English Books Online (EEBO).

A Caribbean map from this book, titled "A New Map of the Empire of Mexico..." is featured in the Maps section of this online exhibit
