Two years after the death of Toussaint L’Ouverture, British Captain Marcus Rainsford published the first English account of the Haitian Revolution (1794-1804). Rainsford, who supported the self-determination of the Haitian revolutionaries, provides dramatic illustrations, maps, and a facsimile of a letter by L’Ouverture. In 1802, Toussaint L’Ouverture was imprisoned by General Charles Leclerc, who was sent to Haiti by Napoleon Bonaparte to restore French hegemony over the island.
