This map was published originally by Johnson and Ward in 1862 in Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas with the cooperation of J.A. Colton who established his publishing firm in New York in 1831.
This was during the Civil War when many war maps were also being issued by these prominent map publishers.
This map labels Monroe County as “Country occupied by the Seminoles.” The area between Charlotte Harbor on the west coast and Lake Okeechobee is called Big Prairie, but on some maps it is called Big Saw grass (Roeser Map). The two earliest railroads in the northern part of the state are shown.
Alvin Jewett Johnson started his publishing company in New York in 1858. It later became Johnson and Browning (1859-1862) then Johnson and Ward (1862-1866). A.D. Johnson (1866-1879), Alvin D. Johnson and Son (1879-1880) and finally Alvin J. Johnson and Co. 1881-1887.
