Title:
Map of Florida
Cartographer:
Thomas, Cowperthwait and Co. (Publisher)
Summary:
This map was published by Thomas, Cowperthwait and Co. in Philadelphia which started in 1845 and kept the name Cowperthwait as late as 1877. Even though other names were added to, omitted, or changed from time to time, they are quite confusing. These included Thomas De Silver and Butler. They published Atlases for Samuel Augustus Mitchell, Warrens and Burrough. The company was finally taken over by the Butler family in Philadelphia.
Three insets show Pensacola, Tallahassee and Harbor of St. Augustine. Some “Routes of the army during the Seminole War, Forts, Battles Grounds,” are shown but not as many as on some other maps. In the upper and lower margins are “Water Routes” but the map must be turned to the left in order to read them. However, the map is overall decorative and shows the countries quite clearly.
