Summary:

This is one of the earliest maps published after Florida became a state. It shows “Routes of the Army during Seminole War Forts- Battlesground” (referring to the second Seminole war 1835-1842). Other statistics are shown in both top and bottom margins. Insets are of Pensacola; Tallahassee and Harbor of St. Augustine.
Samuel Augustus Mitchell was a prolific map publisher as well as a geographic author. His business was in Philadelphia which was one of the primary publishing cities in the U.S. One of his first publications was A New American Atlas. 1831, first published by A. Finley in 1826. An earlier map of Florida was issued in 1836 (It is shown in the Second Spanish Period). His son carried on the business with editions as late as the 1879 New General Atlas. The borders of the maps changed over the years but were always decorative.
