Title:

Boca y Barra Del Rio San Juan

Cartographer:

Gonzalez, T. (1750-1846)

Summary:

This chart of the St. John River, one of half a dozen engraved by Gonzales under the direction of the bureau of hydrography in Madrid is similar to the ones of the St. Marys River and the Nassau River. The main charts and maps made during the second Spanish Period (1783-1820) were of coastal harbors or rivers used for trade. Very little interior mainland was mapped especially by the Spanish. The City of Jacksonville as a port came later, but meanwhile Zespedez the Spanish governor used the river as one of the few accesses to the interior.
