Title:

Carte deduite des coastes de la Louisiane et de la Floride

Cartographer:

Bellin, Jacques Nicolas (1703-1772)

Summary:

This large, copper engraved map measures 24½ inches high by 35 inches wide and is folded in the middle. It was published in the Hydrographic Francoise and is listed as chart No. 66 and dated 1764. Though the publication began in 1737 and continued to 1807, this map was probably in the publication of 1765 or 1772 (re-issue). The peninsula is shown as mostly islands and resembles the maps of Gibson & Jefferys, and all were probably based on a Spanish manuscript map. Lac du St. Espirit is Lake Okeechobee, and B. du St. Espirit is Tampa Bay. Arrows indicate that the Canal de Bahama water flows north. Bellin’s later map of 1768 is based on this one. In the left lower corner is a large inset of the Mississippi delta.
Among collectors, this is one of the most desirable maps of the area of Florida.
