Florida

Cartographer:

Mallet, Alain Manesson 1630-1706

Summary:

Published in Description de L'Univers, Paris 1683.

This miniature map of Florida is one of the most popular maps among collectors because copies are still available and are affordable even though it is not very detailed. The peninsula is labeled "Tegesta" and is bordered above by "Apalche" with "Virginie" north of that.

Later editions of the Atlas were published in Frankfurt and London as late as 1688.

Mallet was an engineer who served in the Portuguese army and later for Louis XIV after his return to Paris.

This particular map may have been derived from the one by Sanson.

There is a short description of St. Augustine on the reverse.
