Summary:

This copper engraving shows the label Floride on a huge area including the peninsula and extending west and southwest to Rio de Palmas (near Panuco Mexico); north to Canada ou Nouvelle France. The northeastern part is called Floride De Franco, which is bordered on the northeast by Virginie.

Nicolas Sanson was a prolific French mapmaker and geographer to the King, who worked originally in Abbeville, France then in Paris. He started off as a military engineer and then began publishing maps in 1643. His map publishing with printer and engraver Mariette was continued by his family after his death.

This particular map was probably copied by his nephew Pierre DuVal.
