Title:
World (Planisphere). Kunstmann IV
Cartographer:
Reinel, Jorge (1518-1572)
Summary:
Jorge Reinel was the son of Pedro. Both were Portuguese chartmakers in the service of Castile for King Charles V. This manuscript chart shows Hispanola, Cuba and Yucatan and land north of Cuba with a small peninsula labeled "TeraBimini" with a Spanish flag. The Gulf of Mexico is not delineated though Central and South American coasts are shown in detail with numerous placenames. The North American coast shows no placenames. The name Bimini was obviously derived from Peter Martyr's map of 1511 as well as its east-west fairly flat southern coast.
