Project Description:
This course project focused on improving student competency/use of portable digital tools in storytelling for Web-based online newspapers and magazines. The project involved two levels. First, it included additional development of a course and project Web site (Our National Parks, http://ournationalparks.us) by introducing a content management system (ExpressionEngine) and with some redesign of the original project site. The project also sought to enhance student skills and use of portable digital equipment such as laptop computers, wireless network connections, digital still cameras, video cameras, and digital audio recorders to gather and collect information both on campus and while on the road at national parks sites around the nation. Our fall project in 2009 focused on Yosemite National Park and our spring 2010 project focused on Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve and New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park. For both semesters, we also worked at the four national parks/preserves of South Florida (Dry Tortugas, Everglades, Biscayne, and Big Cypress). For the project, feature content is prepared and posted on the project Web site.
